What should you be careful of when entering the Mt. Yotei area?"

*The Yotei Area has been desginated as a Shikotsu-Toya National Park since 1950. Any and all activities which may effect the environment such as installation works, advertisements, land use, bamboo cutting etc. are all strictly controlled.
*We ask all to be respectful of the nature of the area and to help protect it for all to enjoy.
*Do not litter, seek out animals or plants, and do not feed wild animals.
*The setting up of tents outside of designated camping grounds is prohbited.It is also prohibited to enter the area via snow-mobile.

What should you be careful of the trails of Mt. Yotei?

 *When using the mountain trail, pay attention to the following points set out on the Forest Office website, "Entering Forest Area" page: 
 ・To protect the environment of the area, do not veer off the mountai trail or enter any other areas outside the trail
  ・Do not startle or feed wild animals such as squirrels or birds
  ・If using climbing sticks please put a protective cap on the end to reduce the damage to the area. Also, please refrain from using them outside the trail.

What should I do if I find a fallen tree?

*If you can safely continue climbing while avoiding the tree, please do so. If you believe that it may pose a risk to others or yourself, come back down and inform the Shiribeshi General Subprefectural Office Forest Office or the Yotei Management & Conservation Liason Committee.

How long does it take from each trailhead to the crater rim and from the crater rim to the peak.

*Mt. Yotei is a mountain for medium to advanced climbers and can take up to 10 hours to climb up and down. Please do not overestimate your abilities and please prepare thoroughly beforehand
*Approx. Climbing Times:
 ・Kutchan-Hirafu Trail - Approx. 4hrs 25mins (additional 45mins to the peak)
 ・Makkari Trail - Approx. 4hrs 40mins (additional 40mins to the peak)
 ・Kimobetsu Trail - Approx. 4hrs 15 mins (Directly Connected to the peak)
 ・Kyogoku Trail - Approx. 4hrs 15mins (5mins to the peak)
Please note that these times are only guides based on the shortest routes. Times may vary based on weather conditions or individual differences.

Where can I purchase a Climbing Memorial Badge?"

*The Mt. Yotei Climbing Memorial Badges are sold in the mountain hut and the place listed in the below link for \700 (Tax inlcu.). The design changes every year. Please confirm below.

What is the weather like in the Yotei Area?

*Mt. Yotei has an alltitude difference of approximatly 1,500m and the normal temperature gap from the bottom to the top is 10˚C.There can be strong winds of up to 5-10 m/s can blow above the forest limit around the 9th station. Please take into account the changeability of the weather and temparature.
*Please refer to the relevent weather, temperature, wind speed information at the mountain hut before climbing.

How do I submit Climbing/ Area Entrance Notification & Planning documents?

*Please submit a climbing plan to the nearest Police Station before your climb.
*In addition, a Mountain Entering Registration has been set up at every trailhead, please sign when entering.

Can small children climb as well?

*Acoompany with an experienced guide and take extra precautions so that they do not stray off the main trail.

What should I do in the case of an emrgency or injury?

*Should you sustain an injury while climbing, don't move and call out for help. If your phone has reception, call 119 and request a rescue.
If you have a GPS service on your phone or a GPS device,turn it on before calling.
*Should you need to rest please use the mountain hut.

What public transportation is there to each trailhead?

*There is a bus service running from JR Kutchan Station to the Kutchan-Hirafu trail and to the Makkari trail through Donan Bus. The service is limited so please check the time table in advance.

How much food/water should be brought when climbing?

*There is no place for you to refil water containers along the mountain trail. So please ensure you have prepared adequate food and water supplies beforehand.
*There are no food or water at the mountain hut. You will need to bring them yourself.
Until about mid-June, you may be able to take some of the snow near the mountain hut and use that to replenish water supplies. Be warned though that no water quality tests have been carried out so the water may not be of a suitable drinking standard.
*Please check the weather conditions at the mountain hut in advance from the following.

Bringing pets

*In the special protected areas higher than the 5th station, releasing of any animals is prohibited. Please make sure that any pets are kept on a leash and ensure that all excrement is taken away with you.
*Also, please refrain from staying in the mountain hut with a pet except an assistance dog.

In relation to bears

*Though the foot of the mountain is not considered a breeding area, several sightings are reported each year.

Lost & Found

*Any items found either around trail heads or the moutain hut will be held by the Mt. Yotei Management & Conservation Committee and after a period of time will be disposed of.Contact at the Council Office : 0136-23-3388

*The council itself does not arrange or offer any camping or accomodation facilities. The surrounding campsites are as follows:
  -Be warned that setting up a tent overnight around the Rest Area or the trail is prohibited by Nature Park Regulations

Mountain Hut

*Though Mt. Yotei can be climbed in a day, it can take up to 10hrs. In this time period, the weather conditions on the mountain can change suddenly. Also, the physical condition of climbers may deteriorate. As such the mountain hut have been set up.
*The current hut was built by the Ministry of the Environment in 2014 and is located next to the previous hut.

Location & Acess to Mountain Hut

*Located between the 9th station of the Kutchan-Hirafu Trail and  Makkari Trail.
*Operating Period: 2nd Saturday of June - Early October
(The mountain hut can be used outside of the above mentioned period but there is no management staff)

How to Use the Mountain Hut (Short Period)

*Management of the mountain hut is undertaken by the Ministry of the Environment and the Mt. Yotei Management & Conservation Liason Committee.
*No food or water will be supplied at the hut. Please prepare your own.
*When using the rest area and toilet facilities, please make sure to pay the fee.
*As the rest space is limited, please be repectful of other users.
*Please take all watse with you when you leave.
*Please follow all instructions given.

How to use the Mountain Hut (Overnight)

*With the construction of the new mountain hut in 2014, the capacity has decreased by more than half. As the area is more designed for emergency usage,please plan a day hike.                                                                                      -Max. Capacity:40ppl (It will be quite crapmed should numbers exceed 20ppl)
*As there is limited space, please call ahead of time to the Mt. Yotei Management & Conservation Liason Committee at 0136-23-3388 and tell them when you wish to stay and how many people will be staying.
*Please make sure to pay the fee when staying as well as a seperate fee when renting a sleeping bag or blanket.
*Please refrain staying in groups of over 10ppl.
*Depending on weather conditions, more than 20ppl might stay even on weekdays. Please refer to the number of previous season as the below link.
*As the hut is built for emergencies please refrain from using it for more than 2 nights.

Toilet Facilities

*The mountain hut has bio-toilet facilities which utilises a soil treatment system,. This system was first introduced in Hokkaido.
*No toilet paper will be supplied. Also, toilet paper cannot be dropped into the toilet bowls. So please bring it with you and take it back home.
*Please make sure to pay the usage fee
If you are paying the accomodation fee, the toilet usage fee is included.

The Site of Demolished Old Hut

*The old hut was dismantled by the Shiribeshi General Subprecture promotion Bureau in 2016. There are plans to restore the natural flora of the site after consultation with the Ministry for the Environment. It is forbidden to set up a tent in this area by Nature Park Regulation.

Hut Manager

*2 Management Staff Members will stay on a weekly basis during the operation period of the Mountain Hut.
*In addition to maintaining and managing the mountain hut, the management staff as a natural conservation supervisor will also supervise, manage, and/or perform work in the conservation and use of natural park resources in accordance with the Hokkaido Natural Environment Conservation and Supervision Project Outline.
*Please follow any instructions given by management staff.

Entering the Mountain Area during Winter

There is no particular regulations in relation to entering the mountain area during the winter. However, we ask you to properly prepare insurance and climbing notification in addition to adequetely preparing equipment and considering your safety.

The Mountain Hut during Winter

No management staff will be present outside of the summer opening period. You can enter the hut through the south ladder to the 2nd floor. Use cokes stove as needed.
 -No food or water will be supplied.
 -Only a certain amount of fuel is stocked. There may be a chance that there may be none left.

Parking Space in Winter

(Kutchan-Hirafu Trail)
Snow clearing will be done on the car-park of the Half Moon Lake. Keep parked cars off roads for snow plows and the peripheral residents.

(Makkari Trail)
The Yotei Nature Park area will be cleared of snow during the winter season. keep parked cars off roads for snow removal and other users.
