| The Yotei area of 6826ha has been designated as a part of Shikotsu-Toyo national park since 1949 to protect its natural site. The unspoiled beauties such as the alpine plants near the summit, the virgin forest on the hillside and wild living things have been reserved up to today. Above 1700m is the alpine zone: hundreds of alpine plants bloom in July to the beginning of August. This area is also a home for many mammals such as Ezo red fox, Siberian chipmunk, flying squirrel, and over 130 species of wild birds inhabit the forest. Mt. Yotei attracts those who seek for hiking and nature observation from all over Japan and even from overseas. |
