Where is Kutchan?
Kutchan is located in western Hokkaido,
the northernmost island of Japan.

Kutchan is surrounded by the 
beautiful Niseko mountain range, 
stunning Mt. Yotei and Shiribetsu River, 
one of the clearest rivers in Japan.

"Kutchan" originally means "a place 
flowing from somewhere like a pipe"in 
indigenous Ainu language.

Spring(Apr.-Jun.) 
Refreshing weather with new 
green leaves and flowers. Cherry 
blossoms bloom in May.The avg. 
temperature is about 10℃. 
Summer(Jul.-Aug.)
Dry hot weather with the 
highest avg. temperature of 
20℃. Alpine plants are the 
best in July.
Autumn(Sept.-Oct.)
Temperatures drop with each
 rainfall and evening temperatur-es can drop below freezing. The 
leaves begin to change colour 
in September. 
Winter(Nov.-Mar.)
The temperature can drop to 
-20℃. The maximum snow depth
 can reach up to about 2m.


The main industry
The main industries in the area are agriculture and tourism. 
Local specialities include agricultrural products such as potatoes and outdoor sports such 
as rafting, skiing and snowboarding. As an international resort town, Kutchan attracts 
tourists from within and outside of Japan.

The brief history of Kutchan
Settlers first cleared this area for permanent residence in 1892. 
Most of the first settlers were from Tokushima prefecture in Shikoku island. 
Kutchan village was separated from Abuta village in 1893 and was reorganised into a town in 
1916. Thanks to the fertile land, the population exceeded 10,000 in 1903 and became an 
important centre  with branches of government agencies and transportaion terminals.
